On June 20, the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) unveiled the Digital Key standard 1.0, which includes a number of smartphone makers and automotive manufacturers. If you install an app that supports this standard on your smartphone, you can open the car door or start it. If you attempt to open the car door in any other way than the digital key, the door will not open.
This technology has adopted high security technology. For example, an automobile manufacturer uses an existing secure system to send digital key information to the owner's smartphone. When unlocking the car from the outside, short-distance NFC is used to prevent eavesdropping.
Audi, BMW, GM, Hyundai, Volkswagen and other auto makers participated in the announcement. In addition, parts companies such as Panasonic, Alps Electric, Continental Automotive, Denso, NXP and Qualcomm also participated.
CCC has already begun drafting the Digital Key 2.0 specification and plans to build a structure to ensure interoperability of protocols and devices for mutual authentication between automobiles and smartphones with the aim of the first quarter of 2019.
Digital keys are very convenient for people who often lose their car keys because they only need a smartphone. In addition, many users can download key information common to the smartphone in the car sharing service, and the usage period and the available time can be set. Car rental service companies will also be able to add convenience to management.
